One of the most spectacular Formula 1 drivers of recent years, Kamui has earned a reputation as a fierce and determined racer. That came as no surprise to TOYOTA, which was a key factor in Kamui’s emergence on to the world stage. As a member of the Toyota Young Drivers Programme, like Kazuki, he soon set off to Europe to test himself against the best rising stars in the world. His Grand Prix debut came unexpectedly, when he was called upon to replace the injured Timo Glock in the final two races of the 2009 season, scoring what turned out to be TOYOTA’s final points in Formula 1. By then, his abilities were clear to the whole paddock and he soon found a race drive with Sauber, earning himself countless worldwide fans with his fearless overtaking style. In 2016, Kamui returned to his “home” team to be part of TOYOTA’s successful WEC programme.
