In 2017, the TMG GT86 Cup once again is held within the framework of the VLN. The TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH one-make cup is held at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for the fifth consecutive year. The TMG GT86 CS-Cup is a close-to-production racing car with a spare-part service and technical on-site service, thus representing the ideal basis for perfect motor racing at reasonable costs.
In the eighth and penultimate round of the 2017 TMG GT86 Cup, held in changeable weather conditions, British team Milltek Racing opted for a risky but clever tyre strategy that helped them to win the race and regain the championship lead. Second place was secured by Pit Lane – AMC Sankt Vith, with the Toyota Swiss Racing Team, Milltek’s only real championship rival, being ranked third.
In round eight of the TMG GT 86 Cup, in changeable weather and difficult conditions, Milltek Racing went all out. While the major part of the grid changed from slicks to wets and vice versa several times, the Britons opted for contesting the entire race on slicks. “The rains always fell just in certain sections,” explained Steve Pound, CEO of Milltek Sport and Milltek Racing Team Principal. “Upon agreement with our drivers we therefore made this decision and it proved to be a good move.” Nonetheless, the racing got close in the closing stages of the race. “In the final stint I had an unnecessary close encounter with a careless BMW driver,” said Milltek Racing driver Lucien Gravis. “Afterwards, the left side of our car looked like corrugated metal and I pitted for a short safety check. Fortunately, our lead was big enough to allow us to rejoin the race as race leaders and take the chequered flag as winners.”
Meanwhile, the Toyota Swiss Racing Team vehicle crossed the line in second position but the squad received a one-minute time penalty for having started from the pit lane and consequently dropped back to third. The team nonetheless was happy with its achievements. “Following an accident in the qualifying session, we worked on repairing the cars up to the final second,” revealed Team Principal Hannes Gautschi, “Therefore, we are happy that we were able to contest the race at all. That’s why we are perfectly satisfied with third place.”
So, second place was inherited by the squad of Pit Lane – AMC Sankt Vith in its new guise. #531 this time was raced by Jacques Castelein (CH) as well as the two US-Americans Jean-Francois Brunot and Dennis Cassey. “We had a trouble-free race and all the drivers did a great job in the difficult conditions,” Team Principal Olivier Muytjens said. In the closing stages we and the Swiss were involved in a thrilling battle for second position. Now we are delighted with having secured another podium.”
In the championship, Milltek Racing (133 Points) now hold a five-point lead over Toyota Swiss Racing Team (128) and consequently, the final round on 21st October will be a true final in the battle for the title. Pit Lane – AMC Sankt Vith (85 points) also have got theoretical chances of winning the championship but only can do so if they win the season finale, with Miltek Racing scoring just one and Toyota Swiss Racing Team not more than six points.
