This year, employees from TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) will field their own team, TMG United, in the VLN for the third time. Therefore the search is again underway for drivers of the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car.
TMG United has already selected Charlotte Wilking, winner of last year’s driver search, as one of their drivers. But her team-mate will be chosen in another talent-selection process during the 14 March official test day.
TMG United: hobby racers
TMG United recruits its members from TMG only. They come from various departments and all work on this motorsport project in their free time. This commitment provides them with an opportunity to pool their expertise and translate it into practice in both the workshop and on the track. The newly-formed team for 2015 has 10 members. New team manager is Martin Duke, a 49-year-old American who has worked for TMG in Cologne for many years and is the financial controller for the TOYOTA Racing project in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). “We are currently preparing the car and I can say that our TMG GT86 CS-V3 will stay more or less the same. We will again start in the close-to-production V3 category. In the past two years, we won races in this category once in each season. This time, we go for two wins,” said Martin.
He expects his new drivers “to show enthusiasm for motorsports, have a lot of talent and become a full member of a team of enthusiastic hobby racers”. The team will be fielded in the first six VLN races. If budget suffices, more races will be entered, all of which will take place at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. Charlotte Wilking won the 2014 driver selection and this season will be a mentor for her new team-mate. “You first have to get used to our car because it’s right-hand drive. But my experience will certainly help. And I hope that our new driver is a fast learner, will get better over the season and drive our car competently and safely,” she said.
Moritz Oestreich, winner of the first TMG driver selection in 2013, is no longer part of the team. He made use of the TMG opportunity to gain a reputation and is now an established endurance racer. “This proves that our team can be the launch pad for a VLN career,” Martin added. “There can be no better advertisement for us.”
